Reading books for kids aged 8-12

The more a child reads, the better their vocabulary. In ‘school’, children who are able to read should be encouraged to do so, but outside of the classroom, when reading for pleasure, the format of the book doesn’t matter – what’s important is the child engaging with the words. Audiobooks are a great way to encourage children to enjoy listening to stories, which in turn can encourage them to read.

Whether your child reads from a paperback or e-book, or listens to the audiobook, these books are sure to keep them reading!

The updated, modern take on Robin Hood by Robert Muchamore is a fun take on a classic and the themes – hacking, piracy, smuggling etc – are great conversation starters.

There are five books in the series with another on release in 2023.

You know a book is good if after reading it, they ask to buy the audiobook! The Castle Glower series by Jessica Day George is a fantastic series for kids to read themselves or as a family read-aloud book.

Alex Rider books are incredibly popular and the books translate perfectly to audiobooks. Written by Anthony Horowitz, the books are a good transition series for kids who are slightly too old for kids’ books and too young yet for young adult fiction.

Alex Rider: Snakehead

Escape from Mr Lemoncello’s Library is one of our favourites from the Lemoncello series.

The Young Bond series is again a good choice for the in-between years when they could read Bond but the content may be too adult yet.

The Bear Grylls series are inspiring and full of tips and tricks for would-be-adventurers. With 12 books in the series, it’s a great book choice to encourage kids to keep on reading.
